An employee at Roaring Penguin received another hard-copy spam, this time from Spain:

Hard-copy Spam

Today, I received an envelope at work from Malaysia. It was very intriguing: I don't know anyone in Malasia (though Roaring Penguin does have a couple of customers there.) Here's the envelope:

Inside the envelope was the following letter. Yes! A hard-copy spam!
I wonder how well the economics of that work?

Social Media, Best Value?

Good Morning! I read an article this morning that the Washington Monument cracked near the top during yesterdays earthquake. Glad to hear there were no injuries reported!

I don't know about everyone else but I am on LinkedIn daily reading the news and seeing who is connected to who, checking my group updates. This article by Nick Hughes discusses which social media tool has the best value for your time and business.

Business Insider

Interesting to read what others are saying about these tools, makes you think about where we are spending our valuable time.

CompTIA Roundup & CanIt Archiver

It is that time folks, to say goodbye to CompTIA and Washington D.C. The show was successful, we made it to quite a few informative sessions and met many new friends.

We ran in to many of our great partners there, Level Platforms, ConnectWise, Autotask and N-able to name a few! We are so pleased to work with great partners like these. Everyone's booths looked great and were buzzing with activity.

Thank you to our booth neighbours for being so friendly and fun to chat with every day, it was a pleasure to meet all of you!

Our discussions about CanIt Archiver with attendees just reinforced that we have an amazing new add on feature that companies are in need of and we look forward to continuing the conversations once back in the office.

CompTIA Day 2

Hello from Washington D.C.! What a beautiful city! The people are so friendly and helpful. Walked around for hours at the Smithsonian, National Monument, Lincoln Memorial and the White House. It was a very full Sunday! Well worth having sore feet.

Day 1 of CompTIA Breakaway was a good one. The welcome reception and vendor fair got off to a good start, crowds were buzzing about from booth to booth, media making the rounds as well.

Today we are off to the Breakaway Networking Lunch in the International Ballroom and the Breakaway Technology Vendor Fair in Columbia Hall. I will be chatting with partners about their initiatives and will update you shortly. Have a great day everyone!

Testing 1-2-3

Testing is critically important to producing high-quality software. I'd like to take you behind the scenes at Roaring Penguin and talk a little about how we test CanIt.

Test Types

Our tests are broken into three basic sets:

  1. Unit Tests test each module of the software separately. Unit tests are designed to catch logic errors within each module.
  2. Regression Tests test the system as a whole. These do a full installation of the software, run mail through it, and verify that the results are as expected. Regression tests catch integration errors. They also ensure that once a bug is found and fixed, it stays fixed.
  3. Virtual Machine Tests test our RPMs and ISO images. We do clean installs into brand new virtual machines to make sure the CanIt system is installable. We do basic sanity checks to ensure it works as expected. These tests catch packaging and dependency errors.

Running Tests

The unit and regression tests are run each time we commit a change to our git repository. We have a web page with the status of each test. This lets us know as soon as possible if and when something is broken.

The virtual machine tests are run with a single command when we prepare for a release. They are quite time-consuming, and are therefore impractical to run with each check-in.

How many tests?

To give you an idea of the scope of our testing, here's how many tests we have:

  • Unit Tests: 20,775 individual tests.
  • Regression Tests: 5,389 individual tests, run both with and without Storage Manager.
  • Virtual Machine Tests: 260 individual tests

As you see, that's a lot of tests. While it's impossible to ensure bug-free releases, we do our best to make each release as robust as possible. We also do our best to make sure that fixed bugs stay fixed.

CanIt Archiver

Good Day!

It is a sweltering 35 C in Ottawa today, 45 C with humidity! No relief in sight, looks like this heat wave will continue into the weekend. Stay cool people!

The launch of our new add on feature for e-mail and business continuity is off to a great start. Clients are thrilled to have a lot more free time available for other projects.

CanIt Archiver solves 2 main issues; e-mail is safely stored during server outages and it is searchable, even the end user will be able to figure it out without a call to support.

CanIt Archiver is available as e-mail archiving software or as a Hosted e-mail archiving service

It really is that simple!

If you want to see for yourself just how effective CanIt Archiver is sign up for your 30 day evaluation here:

CompTIA Breakaway 2011

Good Afternoon! I trust everyone is having a fabulous summer so far. The weather certainly has been agreeable here in Ottawa!

Roaring Penguin is gearing up for CompTIA Breakaway 2011 which is being held in beautiful Washington D.C. this year. We will be a vendor at the show, Booth # 616 so please come on by to say hello and check out our newest addition to the CanIt line up, CanIt Archiver . We are looking forward to informative sessions, hanging out with our partners and meeting new friends.

The agenda this year is very appealing. I have my eye on a few sessions that I know are going to motivate me. You will also see me wandering around taking pictures of the event, if you do, smile big and say cheese!

We look forward to seeing you there!

Welcome to the Roaring Penguin Blog

Its long overdue, and at this point it is still more "beta" than "better" but welcome to the Roaring Penguin Blog. This spot should give us a chance to express our opinions and put up material that just doesn't belong on the Roaring Penguin Web Site

All the opinions expressed here are the private opinions of the authors. We are not going to make any attempt to police or edit their thought processes.
